Why I Joined CoinFund
I am pleased to be joining CoinFund as an Investor — a move that I am excited to make from both a personal and professional perspective. CoinFund has an outstanding 9+ year track record of disciplined venture investing in some of crypto’s most prolific companies, and I am thrilled to join their team of seasoned investors. I am looking forward to having the opportunity to work alongside some of the world’s most innovative, disruptive founders who are driving the development of the new internet.
I started my career as an investment banking analyst at AGC Partners, where I had the opportunity to work with founders during critical points of their journeys. I had the chance to hear founders’ stories, learn about their business, and act as a partner as they looked to bring on the right investment partner — or reap the financial reward of years of hard work through selling their business. While I found this experience deeply rewarding, I wanted to work with founders as a long-term partner. So, I became an investor at Battery Ventures, where I had the opportunity to do just that and support the growth of businesses following an investment. I also had the chance to study a broad spectrum of software verticals and speak with a diverse group of founders looking to build market-defining businesses.
It was during my time at Battery that I began my crypto journey. I would drive research projects identifying technology subsectors that I believed provided a compelling opportunity for future growth and large-scale outcomes. It was during this work that I took my first deep dive into crypto. I became captivated by the space and enamored with what was possible through replacing existing technologies with decentralized solutions. When I first got onchain, I remember thinking that DeFi primitives such as borrow / lend platforms made so much intuitive sense and provided unparalleled access. The ability to deposit your assets as collateral and instantly get a loan in a stablecoin with a few clicks of a mouse seems simple, but I realized it was a meaningful improvement over the existing financial system. Traditionally, loans were kept behind barriers such as bank accounts, credit history, meetings, and approval processes. Onchain, all it requires is an overcollateralized position and a few clicks. No sign-ups, no approvals.
After my first experience with DeFi, I was galvanized to dig into the space further and explore what other workflows and experiences could be disrupted by software solutions being built in this space. As an investor, I was enthusiastic about the ecosystem’s massive opportunity and wanted to use the skills I acquired during my time at Battery to invest in and help grow category defining businesses in the crypto ecosystem. One large opportunity I saw was for blockchains to provide a better system for global payments. Currently, the global payments landscape is serviced by a network of correspondent banks that each maintain their own ledgers and payment rails to keep track of incoming and outgoing payments. This leads to slower, more expensive payment services than should be expected in the digitally driven world we live in today. Crypto fixes this by acting as a permissionless, decentralized ledger for tracking ownership of value while simultaneously providing near instant asset settlement. This is done with no middleman taking exorbitant fees and introduces a significant improvement over the correspondent banking system.
I knew that I wanted to make the transition to working in crypto full-time, and I am thrilled to have the opportunity to do so by joining one of the most experienced cryptonative investing teams. CoinFund has a unique composition of crypto expertise that has enabled the firm to invest in and help build many of the most important crypto companies and protocols. CoinFund’s mission to ‘champion the leaders of the new internet’ is one that resonates with me personally, and I am highly aligned with the firm’s mission to support best in class founders while also helping grow the crypto space at large.
Joining CoinFund is the culmination of years of professional experience, personal exploration, and a deep-seated passion for technology. I’m excited to embark on this journey, where I can combine my investment expertise with the firm’s mission to empower the next wave of innovation. Should you, or someone in your network be in the process of building infrastructure or an application in the blockchain space that you think I’d find of interest, please feel free to reach out.
